Mi N70 5800 y yo

One of the main problem with modern smartphones (and the 5800 is one of them) is the duration of batteries: if you use GPS, WiFi, and so on you can find that your battery does not last enough to finish the day. In An Exhaustive Guide to Saving Your Smartphone’s Battery they give some hints to improve battery life. But you shouldn’t be very optimistic: they way  of saving it is to avoid the ’smart’ part of the phone. Unfortunately, there are nor many hints about Symbian phones. Anyway, most of the ideas are operating-system independent.

In The Rise of the Super Fakes Jan Chipchase comments on the success in some markets of not-so-bad copies of 'famous' devices. He establishes three categories:

1. Any mobile phone with the adequate logo printed on it
2. A copy of the industrial design with the logo but poorly manufactured
3. A good enough copy, that would confuse many consumers

In Camera Duel: Nokia 5800 vs. Apple iPhone 3GS there is a side by side comparison of a set of photos made with the 5800 and the latest model of iPhone, the 3GS. If you look a t them in the webpage (small size) you can see that the ones taken with the iPhone are darker and seem to have more contrast: they look definitively better. However, if you look at the photos in detail there is no clear winner (imho, of course). Any opinions? I tend to believe that the camera of my former phone (N70) performs better under low light condition but I did not a formal comparison under controlled conditions.

In Spain QR codes are not popular, but I’m still a believer. they can be the way to relate the ’real world’ to the web. For this reason I’m posting about them from time to time (by the way, my reader now is UpCode since the 5800 did not include a reader in the phone). This time I’ve seen in El QR code más original (in Spanish) the story about Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami x QR Code: Takashi Murakami has designed a QR code for Louis Vuitton (Japan). I’ve tried it and it works perfectly with my reader. I was not aware about the fact that these codes can include other things but I think the experiment is very interesting. Long live to QR-codes.

With my new Nokia 5800 phone, I needed to look for a new Twitter client. With my old N70 I was using  Twim but it didn’t workl with the 5800.

I found  The Guru’s Ultimate Guide To Twitter On S60  which is a nice survey of the available tools. I’ve tried several of them and the one I prefer is Snaptu. To tell the whole truth, it is more than a Twitter client: it has several widgets (mainly RSS related, nothing really interesing; what about an IMAP reader like the one that was available at the now reconverted Widsets?). It has a couple of problems: it lacks of a big button to refresh tweets and it has a weak session management: when it loses the session, it tries to reconnect but my experiencie says that it is better to go out and reload the applications. I’m, quite happy with it, anyway.

Another interesting app is Tweets60 but, for some reason, and after a couple of days of use it seems to have its ’memory’ full and it is not able to load new tweets. Since my first try Twibble has had some improvements (but it still has problems with the interface, since it is not specific to tactile devices).

If you are one of the old readers of this blog I beg your pardon: I’ve decided to switch to English. It was not in my ’todo’, but I’m always thinking that I should try to have a blog in (sort of) English. I believed that a blog like this could have a place in the Spanish blogosphere (I still believe it but maybe another person will be able to do it) but I’ll try to get a place in the English-speaking blogosphere. Or, at least, I’ll try to improve my English writing skills.

Alguna vez lo había leido y no sé si realmente hay quien los use o no. Se trata de tonos de llamada en frecuencias altas que utilizarían los jóvenes para las llamadas y que los adultos no serían (seríamos) capaces de escuchar por la degradación propia de la edad. En Ultrasonic Ringtones se pueden descargar algunos mp3 grabados con frecuencias altas (a medida para el oido de cada uno) y hacer una prueba (casera) de audición. Cuidado: los sonidos son realmente molestos para los que los oyen con claridad así que, en lugar de evitar al adulto en cuestión, igual nos encontramos con que le molestamos mucho. Viniendo del N70, lo primero que se nota es la velocidad del procesador: lo que antes costaba tiempo (arranque del sistema, arranque de las aplicaciones, ...) ahora se ve fluido y rápido. No obstante, y después de la aparición del nuevo N97 uno vuelve a sentirse como el hermano pobre: hay un teléfono más nuevo, más potente, con más posibilidades....

Primero, en 5800 XpressMusic vs N97 - speed tests se puede ver la comparación de velocidad en el que no parece que el 5800 se quede muy atrás (aunque en Nokia N97 vs. Nokia 5800 - Performance Tests nos recuerdan que el firmware del 5800 está más afinado porque lleva más tiempo en venta y distribución).

Por otra parte, en Browser speed comparison: N97 vs. Iphone 3G S. Parece hecho por un propietario del iPhone (todas las direcciones que teclea están en el historial del iPhone y no del N97) pero no parece haber grandes diferencias. El iPhone sería un poquito más rápido y a cambio no tiene flash (para ver vídeos de, por ejemplo, youtube). En cuanto al navegador del 5800 tengo que decir que supuso una sorpresa agradable: yo pensaba que tendría que utilizar el Opera, igual que hacía antes pero la verdad es que no he echado de menos características necesarias de un navegador más ’grande’ y que me apaño bastante bien con el que traía el teléfono (a veces se queda un poco ’atascado’ pero habitualmente cumple su papel adecuadamente).

Me he renovado (bueno, la verdad es que ya hace unos días (¡dos meses! cómo pasó este tiempo, casi ni me di cuenta) pero hasta ahora no había tenido la ocasión de comentarlo. Mi elección fue un Nokia 5800 que ha sustituido al N70 (una indicación del tiempo que ha pasado es que ya los de Yoigo me lo liberaron y todo :) ).

Por ahora estoy contento, con pequeños detalles que no terminan de encajar bien (¿para cuando un lector de correo decente en los teléfonos Nokia?). El WiFi es más útil (y utilizado) de lo que yo esperaba y una pequeña decepción con el GPS (consume mucha batería, y la localización basándose en las celdas de telefonía es razonablemente precisa, siempre que no se pida demasiado).

Barajé la posibildad de abrir una nueva bitácora, pero le tomé cariño a esta y creo que vale la pena seguir aquí (aunque el nombre confunda). Tengo varias cosas pendientes de comentar pero nunca termino de conseguir las fuerzas necesarias. Supongo que poco a poco iré comentando también cosillas sobre este nuevo teléfono, programas que utilizo, ... En fin, más o menos lo que ya solía poner por aquí pero con teléfono nuevo.

En Las antenas de móviles centran el debate como prueba para situar a acusados hablan de como se está intentando utilizar los datos de posicionamiento en las celdas de telefonía para que los acusados de un delito puedan ser acusados a partir de la zona que visitaron en el momento del mismo. Dejando aparte que será bueno poder demostrar que alguien estuvo en un sitio cuando se cometía el delito, a uno le queda la duda de si realmente las compañías guardan datos no sólo de cuándo y con quién hablamos en un momento dado, sino también de los lugares que recorrimos en un día cualquiera, a través de la información de esa mismas celdas. No queda muy claro en el artículo cuál es la realidad.
