Why your smartphone battery isn’t as good as your smartphone

Some changes here (among others, I switched to Android; bye, bye Nokia, hope to see you sometime in the future...).

But the reason to post here is to point to an article about batteries: Why your smartphone battery isn’t as good as your martphone.

The currently most important limit of our smartphones is battery duration.

Some advise on travelling and cell phones

Now is the time to return home for most of us, but I found interesting the list of recommendations provided in Traveling abroad with a cell phone? Do these things first. It is very sad to learn things in the hard way, when you cannot solve the problems easily.

Some numbers about smartphones

In Data Monday: Smartphones vs. Feature Phones there is a comparison of smartphones versus other mobile terminals in terms of use (instead of the usual features-based comparisons). Interesting.

How does compare your mobile phone camera to others?

Maybe it is not there but in Cameraphone comparisons: same scene from different devices you can see a comparison of a good number of mobile phone cameras shots of the same scene. If this is important for you, you can have a look befoure buying. It would be more intersting if there were more scenes (night pictures?) for comparison but this is a good resource, anyway. Seen in La misma escena captada por 30 móviles (in Spanish).

For which platform should I program?

Well, it depends. Basically, it depends on your programs target (use, and location) and you can see some data in: The iPhone Obsession and Lying with Statistics.

The state of the mobile web

Some time without writing here. It is quite interesting (at least for me) that my last post was about mobile web and the article that induces me to write again is this The sad state of the mobile Web gets even sadder.

It is a more detailed comment on some of the ideas we posted there and how the mobile web is far from the web 2.0 movement, basically because of the lack of good browsers and adequate hardware to support it in most of the phones.

Mobile web

How does look like your page in a mobilized version? I’m asking this question because I’m naviganting more and more from my 5800 and I’ve discovered that  some programs (Snaptu) in the standard configuration and others use services like the service provided by Google (have a look at the mobilized version of this page, por example). This is what your visitors will see if they not take the further step of configuring their device or checking the standard view. But it can be a problem if your page is not adequate for this transformation. See, for example, what happens in a local newspaper (in Spanish) when you mobilize one of their news pages: for example, the page in here in its full glory and the mobilized version (where you cannot read the information).
Maybe, you hare showing to the world less that you would like to show. Be careful.
Of course, this happens in this page, but there are more; webmasters don't look at their own pages on the mobile?

Batteries (almost) included

One of the main problem with modern smartphones (and the 5800 is one of them) is the duration of batteries: if you use GPS, WiFi, and so on you can find that your battery does not last enough to finish the day. In An Exhaustive Guide to Saving Your Smartphone’s Battery they give some hints to improve battery life. But you shouldn’t be very optimistic: they way  of saving it is to avoid the ’smart’ part of the phone. Unfortunately, there are nor many hints about Symbian phones. Anyway, most of the ideas are operating-system independent.

Jan Chipchase on the superfakes

In The Rise of the Super Fakes Jan Chipchase comments on the success in some markets of not-so-bad copies of 'famous' devices. He establishes three categories:

  1. Any mobile phone with the adequate logo printed on it
  2. A copy of the industrial design with the logo but poorly manufactured
  3. A good enough copy, that would confuse many consumers
Interesting read.
